Early Reviews of Horizon Zero Dawn are Out

Sony’s next big exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn is coming out in just 8 days and some early reviews are already surfacing. Horizon Zero Dawn is Guerrilla’s first foray into the RPG genre and it seems that many reviewers are responding well.

Lucy O’Brien stated, “Horizon Zero Dawn juggles many moving parts with polish and finesse. Its main activity–combat–is extremely satisfying thanks to the varied design and behaviors of machine-creatures that roam its lands, each of which needs to be taken down with careful consideration.” She gave the a 9.3/1o and you can read everything she has to say over at IGN.

Jeff Gerstmann says “Horizon Zero Dawn is familiar but also really refreshing. It’s not a short game (I spent around 30 hours with it), but the storytelling still feels concise and efficient. The combat has some nice options that make encounters fun, even when you’re just stacking up stealth kills from the relative safety of a bush.” Gerstmann gave Horizon a perfect 5/5, you can check out his full analysis at Giant Bomb.

Peter Brown states, “This is first departure from the Killzone series for developer Guerrilla Games, and though you might think the team took a risk by stepping out of its FPS comfort zone to create a third-person open-world action game, you’d never know it was their first rodeo. For every minor imperfection, there’s an element of greatness that recharges your desire to keep fighting and exploring Zero Dawn’s beautiful and perilous world.” You can see everything that Peter has to say over at Gamespot.

All of these early reviews have been praising the world design of the game and that the game looks absolutely beautiful – which comes to no surprise as Guerrilla Games have been known for outstanding visuals. However, the game doesn’t seem to be completely perfect as many reviewers have stated that the side missions in the game don’t have much variety to them.

Caty McCarthy gave the game just a 2.5/5 stating the game is “disappointing” and that the game has “overtly repetitive and constraining missions that worked against its open-world sensibilities.” You can read why McCarthy does not have the same sentiments as other reviewers do at USgamer.

From what I have gathered through most of these reviews, Horizon Zero Dawn is not going to disappoint. If repetitive side missions are the only knock that multiple people are giving it, then I am sure most can live with that seeing as most games struggle with that problem. Long story short, I cannot wait to get my hands on Horizon Zero Dawn and I will be sure to give you guys my thoughts as soon as possible.
