Baldur’s Gate 3 – Beta Review

Larian Studios has come out with the third installment in the Baldur’s Gate franchise, and there are a lot of strong feelings so far. I was a massive fan of Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance series, and I enjoyed the late 90’s early 2000s games as well. It has been nearly two decades since I have played any of the Baldur’s Gate, and I decided to take a shot with Baldur’s Gate 3 since I had a few friends interested in the game as well. There are plenty of thoughts and emotions I have so far with the Beta stage.

I have to start by saying the game is gorgeous. It blew me away with the graphics of the game when I started up the create a character screen. The textures to the skin, hair, and details of the character’s faces; are remarkable. I was honestly getting so excited while making my character because of the graphics. The game looks just as beautiful in real game time, not just character creation. The only visual issue I have seen so far is some of the characters on death will ragdoll and stretch across the screen. Outside of that, the game is phenomenal from the graphics standpoint. Hats off to Larian Studios for giving me the best visuals in a game I have ever seen.

I was terrified to try out Baldur’s Gate 3 due to its combat system. I was a big fan of Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance; turn-based combat was a huge question mark for me. I have always been into fast-paced hack n slash combat, or your typical tab targeting with MMOs. Baldur’s Gate 3 has been a breath of fresh air. Once I was able to accept that Baldur’s Gate 3 is Dungeons and Dragons in a video game, I have been in love. Larian Studios did a great job making this game feel like Dungeons and Dragons with the way the combat plays, character customization, and the dialogue between characters.

Now it is time to talk about my favorite part of the game, dialogue. The best part of stories for me is the ability to speak your way through difficult situations. That was always my favorite part when it came to the Fallout franchise. I always put all my points into charisma and speech to smooth talk my way to beating the games. I love that in Baldur’s Gate 3, there are so many ways to talk through conversations. You can use so many different styles of dialogue. You can use intimidation, persuasion, and even class or race-specific options! The feature from Larian Studios is brilliant and a fantastic way to run your playthroughs!

Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently in early access on Steam, and it does have endless possibilities where this game will go. It is interesting since when you load into the game, it allows you to choose campaign 1, which could hint at some future campaigns to drop for new playthroughs of the story! There are roughly 25 hours available in the early access, and because of that, I would recommend for most to wait to purchase the game till there is more content. I have LOVED this game so far, as I have made it clear through this read, but there does need to be more content for the average person to enjoy. I could not wait to get my hands on Baldur’s Gate 3, so I was the guinea pig for the people. If you are in desperate need of Dungeons and Dragons, feel then don’t wait and throw your monies at Larian Studios.
