Playstation Acquires Bungie

Playstation Studios has it’s newest addition as Sony acquires Bungie. It is reportedly costing Sony $3.6 billion to acquire the Destiny studio. The news was announced on various platforms including Bungie’s official Twitter account.

For those that are worried about the future of Destiny, Bungie CEO Pete Parson assured fans that as part of the acquisition they will still have their creative independence over the franchise and future projects in a statement made on the Playstation Blog.

We remain in charge of our destiny. We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games. We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.

Bungie and Playstation have been building a rapport since Bungie’s departure from Microsoft in 2007, working on bringing various Destiny content to Playstation well before Xbox. The franchise has seen its fair share of changes over the years since Destiny’s release in 2014. The game was originally published by Activision and there was said to be a 10-year plan for the franchise which included three major game releases with multiple expansions on each release. After Bungie obtained the publishing in 2019, they pivoted their model to a free-to-play game with paid expansions.

The next expansion for Destiny 2 The Witch Queen comes out next month with another expansion planned for 2023.
